How to Boot and Install Windows 11 from a USB Drive or SD Card

Installing Windows 11 can be a straightforward process, even for those who are not tech-savvy. With the right tools, you can easily install this latest operating system from a downloaded ISO file using Rufus. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you through the process.

Required Tools:

  • Rufus (a free tool by Western Digital)

  • A Windows 11 ISO file

  • A USB drive or SD card with at least 4GB of free space

Step 1: Prepare Your USB Drive or SD Card

Before installing, make sure your USB drive or SD card is ready to use. You can insert the drive into your computer and turn it on.

Step 2: Write the ISO File to the USB Drive or SD Card

Using Rufus, select the following settings:

  • Drive Label: Enter “Windows” (or whatever you prefer)

  • Image File: Select your Windows 11 ISO file

  • Boot Options: Make sure the boot order is set to USB drive first

Now, click on the “Write” button to begin writing the contents of the ISO file to the USB drive or SD card.

Step 3: Enter BIOS Settings and Set UEFI Mode

After a few minutes of writing process. Once you’ve completed this step, your computer will be restarted. Press F2, F12, or Del to enter BIOS settings. If prompted for UEFI settings, select “Secure Boot” if it’s not already enabled.

Step 4: Save and Exit BIOS Settings

Save the changes made in BIOS settings by pressing Enter on your keyboard. You’ll then exit the BIOS settings.

Step 5: Install Windows 11

Now that you’ve entered UEFI mode, navigate to the USB drive or SD card from the BIOS setup screen (usually under “Advanced tab”). Select the boot option and choose the partition where you want Windows to install on. Make sure the partition is empty by selecting it.

Step 6: Boot into Installation Media

Restart your computer with the USB drive or SD card inserted, then enter the BIOS setup again and select “Troubleshoot” or “Advanced options.” Look for an option to boot from a USB drive or SD card. Choose that option and press Enter.

Step 7: Install Windows 11

Windows 11 will now start installing on your computer. Follow the prompts to complete the installation process, including setting up your user account, choosing a language, and setting up network settings. If you encounter any issues during installation, refer to the Windows 11 installation guide for troubleshooting tips.

Step 8: Activate Your Windows 11 License

After completing the installation, enter your product key (if required) and activate your Windows 11 license using the built-in activation process or a third-party activation tool. Congratulations! You’ve successfully installed Windows 11 on your computer!

Remember to always keep your USB drive or SD card safe from prying eyes, as you never know who might be looking for it. With Rufus by your side, you’re now ready to embark on this exciting new chapter in your computing journey.
